Find Scott Civil Dockets

Civil matters in Scott County start with the right court. Scott County civil court dockets list the pleadings, service, motions, hearings, orders, and judgments that move a noncriminal case along, and some of these cases show up in the public county search while others take a separate clerk route. Treat the docket as an index. It may not carry the filed documents or protected attachments behind each entry. The court clerk can confirm a setting, pull a clerk-held file, and explain how to order a plain or certified copy.

Why Scott Chancery Is Separate

The public Scott TnCIS checklist offers only two court options: Circuit Court and General Sessions. Chancery is absent. That gap is the biggest limit on a civil docket search in Scott County. Michael Potter is the Chancellor-appointed Clerk & Master. He keeps the Chancery dockets and records at the Justice Center.

Routing rule: Search Circuit and General Sessions civil matters in Scott TnCIS. Call the Clerk & Master for Chancery. Do not assume a blank portal result means no civil case exists.

The County Clerk is a separate office entirely. Marriage licenses, vehicles, business taxes, and county administrative records live there. A complaint, civil order, judgment, or docket sheet belongs with the court clerk for the division where it was filed.

Civil Dockets: What They Show

A Scott County civil docket is simply the chronological index to a case. Scott County posts no public sample of its civil result columns. The fields described here are common Tennessee docket entries rather than a guarantee of what a Scott search will display.

Case numberThe court identifier; confirm the full number and division.
Parties and rolesPlaintiff and defendant, or petitioner and respondent.
Initiating filingA complaint, petition, or other paper that opens the case.
ServiceEntries tied to notice or delivery of process.
Motions and ordersRequests for rulings and the judge's separate directions.
SettingsMotion, status, pretrial, trial, or other hearing dates.
JudgmentA final order, dismissal, default, or other disposition.

A docket line saying a motion was filed does not mean it was granted. An order entry may leave out operative terms. When exact language controls, ask the clerk for the filed order or a certified judgment.

Scott Circuit Versus Sessions Civil

Scott County Circuit Court sits as a general-jurisdiction trial court. General Sessions handles a range of civil matters under Tennessee law and local authority. The county publishes no current universal dollar cap. So a Scott County civil docket search should never assign a dispute to one court based on value alone.

Facing an eviction, forcible-entry, money, or small-claim question? Describe the case to the Circuit Clerk and ask where it was actually filed. Never assume every family matter lands in Circuit or every small dispute in General Sessions without checking the real caption and division.

What Cases Fill the Civil Docket

Scott civil dockets draw on more than one clerk and more than one kind of dispute. The filing decides the route. Public portions may include:

  • Contract, debt, and specific-performance actions
  • Property and real-estate disputes
  • Damages and tort cases
  • Divorce, parenting, child-support, and paternity matters
  • Adoption and surrender proceedings
  • Conservatorship, guardianship, probate, and trust matters

Some family and child-related information stays confidential even where a public docket exists. Adoption records and protected attachments can carry stricter access rules. Ask the clerk what access is lawful rather than assuming every listed document is open.

Scott Chancery Filings by Year

AOC statistical reports track how Scott County Chancery work shifted between two fiscal years. The totals count filed and disposed categories. They are not unique people, a list of public cases, or a measure of delay.

135FY 2024 Chancery filings
170FY 2025 Chancery filings
139FY 2025 dispositions

FY 2025 brought 40 divorces with minor children, 43 without minor children, 16 adoptions, 16 residential-parenting or child-support matters, 12 paternity matters, 11 contract/debt matters, and 11 real-estate filings. For an individual record, go to the Clerk & Master. The annual report cannot search a case for you.

Hearings on the Civil Docket

A setting is a scheduled court event, not automatically a trial. A Scott County civil docket might point to a motion hearing, status conference, or pretrial event. It might also point to a trial or another setting. The county posts no standalone daily civil calendar. And the public search has no separate calendar tab.

Search the case first, read any setting information, then call the proper clerk. Confirm the date, time, courtroom, judge, hearing type, and whether a later continuance replaced it. A continuance only moves the event; it does not dismiss the civil case.

Setting
A scheduled appearance or court event.
Reset
A replacement date for an event that did not proceed as first scheduled.
Default judgment
A judgment entered under applicable procedure after a party fails to respond or appear; the docket and order must be read together.
Disposition
The recorded outcome or closure event.

For a full date workflow, see the Scott County Court Schedule. Then verify the newest information with the clerk.

Request Scott Chancery Records

Michael Potter serves as the Scott County Clerk & Master. Give the party or caption and the approximate year. Add the court, the number if known, and the exact item you want. Phrases that work well include “plain copy of the docket sheet,” “filed order dated,” or “certified copy of final judgment.” Ask about inspection, fees, certification, identification, and delivery before sending payment.

Who Can See Civil Dockets

Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 34 recognizes a right to inspect public court records. That right yields to the Public Records Act, other laws, court rules, and sealing. Civil access is not all or nothing. One docket line can be public. An attachment may stay sealed, redacted, or confidential.

TPRA guidance says requests should be specific enough to identify an existing record and that custodians need not create a new compilation.

TCA section 10-7-504 material illustrates statutory confidentiality categories.

Tennessee Rule 40A supplies context for protected child information in covered proceedings.

If a Scott County clerk turns you away, ask what rule blocks you and whether a redacted or partial file can be released instead. Not everything in a public court record is fair game to copy. Skip personal identifiers, minors' names, medical details, and protected financial data.

When Scott Civil Search Fails

A blank result from a Scott County civil docket search can mean several things. The case may sit in Chancery rather than the court you searched. The party name may be spelled differently. The last digits of the case number may be mistyped, or the filing may be too new to appear. Restricted access is also possible. None of that proves the case does not exist. Run the Circuit and General Sessions Civil search again with fewer fields, then call the right clerk.

The public portal is free after an anti-bot check. It lists no fee for document images. There is no certification schedule, no bulk export, and no update times. Its official disclaimer spells out those gaps. Read it before relying on the site for anything beyond a quick case lookup.

That warning is worth heeding. A quick docket lookup is one thing; the official civil record held by the clerk is what actually counts in Scott County.
